In TV news...
Let’s be real. Everything Mara Brock Akil and her husband Salim Akil get behind morphs into TV gold. “Girlfriends,” “The Game,” and “Being Mary Jane” are just a few of their successful projects. And now, the dynamic duo is gearing up for a brand new romantic drama series.
The Akils are creating an hour-long dramedy, titled “Love Is ___,” inspired from their real-life relationship. Oh? This could get interesting. And the OWN Network has picked it up. The passion project had originally been picked up by ABC, but since the script never made it to production, it was reworked for Oprah’s network.
The project tells the love story between a modern-day power couple. In the world of Black Hollywood, they navigate a complex set of social codes, and this series will explore it all, from the good to the bad… to the ‘90s, because that’s the love story began.
The Akils will serve as executive producers via their Akil Productions banner and stems from their overall deal with Warner Bros. TV. Also, Mara will serve as the showrunner of the upcoming show.
“To have a partner that brings the attention to detail and sheer excellence that Oprah has built an empire on is an absolute dream come true for Salim and me,” said Mara Brock Akil. “That, and it’s Oprah! Love Is ___ is not only a passion project, but is a personal one for us as well. We’re grateful to have her wholehearted support and magic touch behind this story.”
“I’ve dreamed of working with the Akils,” Oprah Winfrey said. “I’ve been a huge fan of their work since first viewing ‘Girlfriends.’ They know just how to hit the cultural nerve to make you think and laugh at the same time.”
“Love Is ___” is expected to premiere in 2018.
The Akils have their hands full. They’re also working behind-the-scenes on an all-black superhero series, titled “Black Lightening,” coming to the CW Network this fall.
