#BlackExcellence is taking over the Tony Awards! Lupita Nyong’o, Danielle Brooks and Cynthia Erivo all are in the running to become first time Tony Award winners. Plus, the hit Broadway show “Hamilton” made history sweeping up 16 nominations. More inside….
With Broadway newbies like Lupita Nyong’o and Danielle Brooks joining the theatre realm, it’s exciting to see these ladies be recognized for their accomplishments in Broadway theatre after their debut.
Lupita has been nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her role in the off-Broadway play-turned-Broadway play “Eclipsed.” And she’s not alone.
“Eclipsed” playwright Danai Gurira is in the running for the Best Play award. “Eclipsed” stars Pascale Armand and Saycon Sengbloh are going head-to-head in the Best Featured Actress in a Play category. Costume designer Clint Ramos is also being nominated in the Best Costume Design of a Play category for "Eclipsed."
“Orange Is The New Black” star Danielle Brooks made her Broadway debut as Sofia in the Broadway musical “The Color Purple.” Chick slayed her part and is being nominated in the Best Featured Actress in a Musical category. Danielle’s co-star Cynthia Erivo is in the running for the Best Leading Actress in a Musical award. And "The Color Purple" nabbed a nomination for Best Revival of a Musical.

The super popular Hip Hop musical “Hamilton” just made history. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway play dominated the awards nabbing a record 16 nominations, the most any play has been nominated in the awards show history. WOW!
