It’s always nice to give folks their flowers while they’re still alive! And that’s exactly what went down at the 8th Annual Essence Black Women In Music Event held at NeueHouse Hollywood last night.
She sings the soundtracks to our lives in every magical black girl way there is....including handing out lessons on how to keep these men out here WHIPPED.
And now, Erykah Badu’s getting showered with all the love. The soulful songstress was honored on the 20th anniversary of her debut album Baduizm at the last night's event. Solange was tapped to present her an award, and it was perfect.
Solo hit the stage to introduce the iconic singer saying:
“She is mother, she is sister, she is friend, she is auntie, she is chief, she is warrior of many tribes,” Solo said. “Empress of the mystic women, ruler of the free. ... And she has been that for 20 years. She is a beautiful reminder that you cannot put us in the box."
Then she quoted Badu:"Look, I choose peace but say, ‘Don’t walk up on me wrong, because this tea and incense can turn into a Colt 45 and Newports if need be.”
Ha!
