A few days ago, R&B singer Sevyn Streeter put the Philadelphia 76ers on BLAST after they pulled her National Anthem performance minutes before she was set to hit the court for the season opener game because she was wear a jersey with the words “We Matter” written across the front.
Right after the organization pulled her performance, she took to her Instagram page and said, “I’m at the 76ers game to sing the National Anthem and the organization is telling me I can’t because I’m wearing a ‘We Matter’ jersey.”
The next morning, she told HOT 97 she wore the jersey to express the injustice that foes on in our country and that she never was told to have her wardrobe approved beforehand.
The 76ers issued a statement shortly after the situation saying they use their games to bring people together and that they would continue to use their platform to positively impact the community. No real apology.
But now, they’re singing a different tune, likely due to the negative backlash they have received.
Today, they apologized to Sevyn and offered her an opportunity to sing the National Anthem at a game of her choice. The apology reads:
As of the time of this post, Sevyn has yet to respond to the offer. We wonder if she does decide to take them up on their offer, if they will request to see what she's wearing beforehand.
