Tinashe makes her debut on her first ever fashion magazine cover. And to keep it interesting, she went topless for V magazine's new music issue. Peep her pics and find out what she said about being compared to other R&B artists and more inside….

Newcomer Tinashe is making her debut into the fashion magazine world with a brand new risqué pictorial. The 21-year-old R&B songstress is gracing the cover of V magazine’s “New Sound of Soul” music issue, sexing it up with a topless (yet classy) editorial, shot by Inez and Vinoodh.

And it gets better. For the cover story, the L.A. native was interviewed by iconic soul singer Patti Labelle. Nice!

While chopping it up with Ms. Labelle, Tinashe talked about being compared to the other R&B ladies in the game, something to be expected once a new singer pops up on the scene. She admitted she sometimes gets frustrated with the comparisons (i.e. Jhene Aiko), but feels there’s room for everybody…IF you’re making good music. She dished,

“Comparisons to other artists can be frustrating, because not only does it put you in a box, but it hinders the listeners’ own creativity. Of course there are always similarities between artists like myself and Jhené Aiko, but that doesn’t mean we’re the same because we exist in a similar genre. If everybody’s making quality shit, then there’s room for everybody.”

The Aquarius singer also talked about being in control of her image and staying true to who she really is. She explained,

“The difference with me, too, is my attitude. I don’t feel like I take everything so seriously. I take my craft seriously, of course, but I don’t feel the need to always play a certain character or a certain part or persona,” she says. “I’m not going to cut something out of my life because it’s not ‘my image.’ I want to be open enough that if I love something I can do it and it will add to myself as an entertainer. If I’m into something that doesn’t fit the label’s idea of me, then fuck it. Some artists get so restricted by their own doing.”

As she works on her upcoming debut album, she also discussed how her label had so much trust in her (and her vision) because she signed with them having already created her own buzz and loyal following. She said,

“I think RCA trusted me so much because of the fact they knew I already came with a fan base that I grew myself online, recording things in my room, I grew from social media. I realized early on that the blogs were what was going to pop me off. They know what I have going is established and valuable and that I’m not a label-made product.”

The young singer is now in the studio working with artists such as Future, DJ Mustard and more for features to complete her debut LP, Aquarius. We can expect her musical offering this fall.

British singer-songwriter FKA Twigs stripped down to nearly nothing for her alternative cover. Well alright. English singers Sam Smith and Jessie Ware also graced alternative covers. Peep them here.

The issue hits newsstands January 15th.
