Off the record sources at The White House are suggesting that Loretta Lynch, the US Attorney For Eastern New York,  may get nominated to replace US Attorney General Eric Holder.  And it would be another historical move.  More inside...

*UPDATE* President Obama has formally announced his intent to nominate Loretta Lynch in a statement:

Tomorrow, the President will announce his intent to nominate U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch to be the Attorney General of the United States. The President will make the announcement in the Roosevelt Room at the White House, and will be joined by Attorney General Holder and Ms. Lynch. Ms. Lynch is a strong, independent prosecutor who has twice led one of the most important U.S. Attorney’s Offices in the country. She will succeed Eric Holder, whose tenure has been marked by historic gains in the areas of criminal justice reform and civil rights enforcement.

Now that U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch has emerged as the leading candidate to be the next attorney general, according to ABC News, many people are questioning when/if President Barack Obama will announce her nomination.

While discussing Ms. Lynch, whose name was leaked to the press by unidentified White House sources, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said POTUS has not made a decision...yet.

The appointment of Attorney Lynch is a little tricky since the Republicans will control the Senate in 2015 and the POTUS wouldn't want to push the nomination through a Democrate-controlled Senate (e.g. now) and have Loretta face a hostile oversight committee once she's in office.

If/when confirmed, Loretta would be the first black female to lead the Justice Department. Not surprisingly, it works in her favor that she is NOT a personal friend of President Obama.  It's been suggested that selecting someone with a close relationship to Obama might lead to a difficult confirmation amid partisan politics.

On an interesting note, Attorney Lynch is already familiar when it comes to dealing with highly politicized cases. During her first few years in the Eastern District, she helped prosecute police officers who severely beat and sexually assaulted Haitian immigrant Abner Louima with a broken broom handle.

We'll keep you posted about the confirmation.
