More controversy for the NFL. Kansas City Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah was penalized 15 yards during Monday Night Football, after he fell to his knees and bowed his head in prayer to celebrate a touchdown. Find out what the NFL said about the penalty inside...
In case you missed it...
Husain Abdullah intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown Monday night, as the Chiefs marched to victory over the New England Patriots (41-14). After his play, the devout Muslim bowed to pray in celebration. He was given a 15-yard penalty for "unsportsmanlike conduct."
Oh?
The incident made some question whether the NFL had something against Muslims? Or are we, as America, attempting to curb public displays of religion by Muslims...due to stereotypes? No one ever penalized Tim Tebow for thanking God after a play. In fact...."Tebowing" went viral. We Americans love our God. But other religions may not receive equal treatment. The NY Times reports that earlier this morning, the NFL clarified the ruling:
“Abdullah should not have been penalized.” Michael Signora, the NFL’s vice-president of football communications, tweeted, “Officiating mechanic is not to flag player who goes to ground for religious reasons.”
According to the NFL rulebook, the penalty comes under Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 (d), which states that “players are prohibited from engaging in any celebrations or demonstrations while on the ground,” however, exceptions are made for going down in prayer.
SPEAK ON IT: Should players leave their religious expressions in the locker room? Or should the NFL be more diligent in awarding exceptions to ALL religions?
