The Dallas Cowboys suffered a huge lost when their star quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending ankle injury last week. It’s reported the organization has no intentions of letting go their star quarterback and still considers their guy.
To prove it, it’s reported Jerry Jones is set to offer Dak Prescott a second franchise tag that will give the two-time Pro Bowler $40 million for the 2021 season.
As you know, Dak suffered a season ending injury when he broke his ankle during the Week 5 game against New York Giants. The star quarterback was visually shaken as he was carted off the field. He’s expected to make a full recovery, according to sources, even though there is a risk of infection since the bone broke through the skin.
Before his injury, Dak and the Cowboys couldn’t come to an agreement to sign a long-term contract, hence the franchise tag.

While the sides could not come to terms on a long-term extension last offseason, there remains ample reasons to anticipate them doing so in 2021, albeit with a salary that will exceed $40M a season when the quarterback is healthy. The Cowboys already had to budget for the potential of carrying Prescott in 2021 at roughly $38M in cash (and against the cap) in the event he played out next season on a second straight franchise tag. The injury has not altered their willingness to do that, sources said, and that remains a near certainty come February when the period to apply the tag is scheduled to begin.
The franchise tag could be good and bad. It’s good because Dak will get paid millions for the year. It’s bad because there’s no long-term agreement. Once the franchise contract is up, then what? Dak has been adamant with the Cowboys about wanting to be paid at least $30 million/year, while the Cowboys want to give up a lump sum of $132 million over six years that would divide into about $22 million a year.
If he made it through this season, he might have had leverage and could negotiate a better deal. Now with his injury, if the Cowboys do well, they could use that against him.
Dak has been through enough this year. On top of the Coronavirus, he was dealing with depression in the wake of his brother's suicide in April. "Undisputed" host Skip Bayless questioned Dak's ability to be a team leader, which rubbed folks the wrong way - FOX Sports specifically as they put out a follow up statement.
"You are commanding an entire franchise," Skip Bayless said. "They’re all looking to you to be their CEO, to be in charge of the football team. Because of all that, I don’t have sympathy for him going public with, ‘I got depressed. I suffered depression early in COVID to the point where I couldn’t even go work out.’ Look, he’s the quarterback of America’s Team.”
“At FOX Sports, we are proud of Dak Prescott for publicly revealing his struggle with depression and mental health. No matter the cause of the struggle, FOX Sports believes Dak showed tremendous courage which is evident in both his leadership on the Dallas Cowboys and in his character off the field," the network said in a statement.
"We do not agree with Skip Bayless’ opinion on Undisputed this morning. We have addressed the significance of this matter with Skip and how his insensitive comments were received by people internally at FOX Sports and our audience.”
