It's official! Jay Ellis' character Lawrence will NOT be returning for season 3. Issa Rae confirmed it herself. Find out what she said, plus peep pics of the "Insecure" cast having fun at the season premiere bash inside...
Jay Ellis' character will NOT be returning for season 3. Rumors about Lawrence possibly not making a return started when Jay said in an interview that he hadn't shot any scenes for the third season. Production was already well underway. Now, it's official. He ain't coming back!
Over the weekend, HBO took over L.A. for the annual Insecure Block Party series. This year, the network threw the first-ever #INSECUREFEST to celebrate the third season of the hit comedy series.
The star-studded, red carpet premiere event converted LA’s new state-of-the-art soccer stadium, Banc of California Stadium into carnival-themed festival grounds as stars Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji, Y’lan Noel and the rest of the show’s bomb cast and crew attended.
At the event, Issa confirmed Lawrence is OUT! Apparently, since Issa and Lawrence have called it quits and he's out of her life, he's off the show as well. And she doesn't care what fans have to say about it.
“No, I don’t care!” Issa said regarding potential fan reactions to the news (via Vulture). “We want to stay as true to life as possible. They had a great conversation at the end of season two and it was just about like, hey, she’s moving on Daniel, sometimes we have those conversations,” she continued. “You never see the exes again. And it’s okay! You gotta explore life without Lawrence.”
Showrunner Prentice Penny also responded, saying, "At the end of the day, we’re always trying to tell stories that are true and authentic. We were in the writers room and we were initially talking about, Okay, well what is he doing?… Well, he’s not in her life right now. It was hard to make stories around that.”
He continued,“We just said, well, if he’s not around, he’s not around. Let’s just deal with the reality of what her life is now. Let’s be true to that, when you breakup and you have closure.”
So it sounds like he's out now, but maybe he could come back later on down the line. Jay seemed to have been blindsided about not returning based on the way he responded in the previous interview. But he's made it clear there are no hard feelings and has been a vocal supporter all summer of Issa and co.
A new HBO press release about season 3 also doesn't mention Jay Ellis' name.
