She had been kicking a** and taking names all tournament. About an hour before she was set to handle up on her non-rival Maria Sharapova at the 2018 French Open yesterday, Serena announced she was withdrawing from the tourney.

Despite pushing through pain and injury to make it to the quarterfinals, the 36-year-old said she still wasn't even at 50% due to her pectoral injury.  And it was best she fell back and retired from the tourney.

Maria, who is on a comeback journey after being penalized for doping, lucked up and advanced.  Serena gave a heartfelt press conference about just how not ideal the situation was.

Today, the 39-time Grand Slam winner - the most Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles combined amongst active players - is giving us a peek at her recovery efforts. While awaiting her MRI, the new mom posted about feeling frustrated, but optimistic because it can only go up from here:

“It’s been incredibly frustrating, but also I’m excited because I feel like I’ve been playing really, really well, and I can only go up ... Hopefully you guys will be there to continue to cheer me on. I love you guys.”

Her latest Ig Stories have been all about keeping a positive attitude:

Something tells us she's coming back better than ever. Get better soon, 'Rena!
