We for sure thought Meghan Markle was the one who invited The Kingdom Choir to sing during her royal wedding to Prince Harry. Turns it, it was Harry's father Prince Charles' idea. Deets inside...
This isn't up for debate: The Kingdom Choir shut the whole royal wedding down when they filled St George's Chapel with their flawless vocals last Saturday. The choir, hailing from South East England and led by Karen Gibson, delivered a perfect rendition of Ben E. King’s classic song “Stand by Me" and followed that up with a beautiful rendition of "This Little Light of Mine" as the Duke & Duchess exited the chapel.
We just KNEW Meghan Markle was behind this #BlackExcellence. However, we're wrong. It was actually Prince Harry's father, Prince Charles, who made the call.
Apparently, he LOVES gospel music and wanted to incorporate it into the ceremony.
"The couple didn't actually ring us at first, the call came from Clarence House," Director/Co-Founder Karen Gibson told BBC reporters. "I understand that Prince Charles really likes gospel music."
"The couple [was] very intentional about what they wanted sung and how they wanted it sung, but the actual idea came from Prince Charles - although they were very happy to have gospel music," she continued.
Who knew?!
This wasn't the choir's first time singing for British royalty. In 2002, The Kingdom Choir was tapped to perform at the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, celebrating 50 years on the throne. The choir has also performed for other notables, including President Bill Clinton, the late Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu.
In another interview, director Gibson revealed Meghan and Harry selected which songs they would sing during the wedding, and that they were quite intentional about what type of songs they wanted.
