We didn’t see this one coming. Shonda Rhimes is leaving ABC and she’ll be taking her talents to Netflix. Deets inside…
Here’s some bittersweet news.
Shonda Rhimes just inked a new blockbuster deal with Netflix, which means, she’ll be leaving ABC/Disney for the streaming company. Netflix offered Shonda a mega multi-year deal luring her away from ABC and nabbing one of the top drama showrunners that’s dominating television.
According to Deadline, Shonda will be bringing her production company Shondaland along with her and it will function as a division of Netflix’s in-house studio. The site also reported the "Year of Yes" author had one more year left in her contract with ABC Studios, but she reportedly negotiated an early exit so she can join Netflix.
So, how much is she getting paid? That’s unclear. BUT, it’s reported the Netflix deal is similar to her four-year deal with ABC and RICHER. Coins, please!
Fans of TGIT shouldn’t worry. She’ll still continue to work on “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” and “How To Get Away With Murder.” She’ll also be working on the upcoming “For The People” and a “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff.
Why did she decide to leave? Word on the curb is that Shonda was ready to grow and evolve as an artist with new opportunities after spending 12 years at ABC. She’s looking to push the envelope with new content, and now that she’s on Netflix, anything goes. Network television and Netflix are two totally different platforms, so it will be interesting to see what Shonda brings us next.
