Rap legend Prodigy of Mobb Deep has sadly passed away today at the age of 42. Full story inside...
He's battled sickle cell anemia since birth, and never let the disease hold him back from putting his ultimate stamp on Hip Hop. Today, Albert "Prodigy" Johnson died after being hospitalized for a sickle cell crisis after a performance and festival in Vegas.
Prodigy's publicist issued a statement to XXL which reads:
“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep. Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis. As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth. The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”
Prodigy, who helped shape the hip hop scene alongside his Mobb Deep duo partner Havoc throughout the 90's and beyond, was just in Las Vegas this weekend for the Art of Rap festival. He even hosted a Mobb Deep afterparty Saturday night at 1 Oak:
He also recently celebrated his daughter's 18th birthday this past March:
Incredibly sad day for his family, friends, colleagues and Hip Hop.
Nas posted a salute to his fellow QB king who paved the way:
Our condolences are with all of his loved ones. R.I.P. Prodigy.
