We’re more than half through Black History Month, so Donald Trump decided to pay his first visit to the National Museum of African American History and Culture today. And, of course, he brought former neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who is in the running to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Ben is featured in one of the exhibits at the museum as well.
First daughter Ivanka Trump, Ben Carson’s wife Candy Carson, Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina), Alveda King, niece of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and a presidential aide/"Apprentice" contestantalso accompanied him on the trip. His visit follows wife Melania's visit lat week and President Barack Obama’s visit last fall.
During Trump’s speech after wrapping up his tour, he talked about taking a pledge to unite the country.
"Today and every day of my presidency I pledge to do everything I can to continue that promise of freedom for African-Americans and for every American.”
After exploring the museum, he called it a reminder of why we have to “fight bigotry and hatred and intolerance." Trump has arguably been big on bigotry and hate train since he started running for president, but we digress.
Trump also spoke out about the recent threats targeting the Jewish community in the U.S. He said the threats are “horrible,” “painful” and that they have to stop. He came under fire as Americans urged him to speak out on said threats.
“The anti-Semitic threats targeting our Jewish community and community centers are horrible, painful and a very sad reminder of the work that must be done to root out hate, prejudice, and evil.”
He needs more people.
