Looks like that SAG Award for Best Ensemble helped Hidden Figures nab the top grossing Oscar contender spot.
Fresh from the epic win, Hidden Figures has reportedly surpassed best picture frontrunner La La Land to become the top-grossing best picture Oscar nominee of the year. It’s the first time the film about a team of African-American women mathematicians/space heroes has topped the musical.
Hidden Figures, starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer& Octavia Spencer, has risen to $119 million in total box office sales while La La Land has raked in $118 million, following last weekend’s box office numbers. By the way, Hidden Figures hit theaters January 6th and La La hit theaters December 25th.
According to Indie Wire, we can expect Hidden Figures to topple over $150 million or more from now till the Oscars. The film has been nominated for three Oscars, including Best Picture (up against La La Land), Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer) and Best Adapted Screenplay.

According to Deadline, the Shondaland honcho and producer Betsy Beers have acquired the rights to Luvvie’s NY Times Best Seller “I’m Judging You: The Do Better Manual” for a comedy under Shondaland’s overall deal at ABC Studios and the cable division ABC Signature. Yep, Shondaland is taking on comedy.
