An interrogation video of University of Oklahoma tailback Joe Mixon has just been released where he explains why he punched a white woman in the face who had pushed and smacked him in the face.“It felt like a dude hit me," he told police and explained he punched her in reaction.
On Friday, a surveillance video was released to the public that shows some of what went down between the college football player and the woman, named Amelia Molitor, at the Pickleman’s Gourmet Café in 2014. Joe’s attorneys released the video because the State Supreme Court had ruled that it must be made public.
Three days after the altercation, Joe, who is a sophomore running back for the Sooners, told detectives he was shocked she smacked him and made it clear that she was the aggressor. He said it started when Amelia purposely blew smoke in his face and then one of her friends hurled a racial slur at him.
In the hour-long interrogation, he told detectives:
"The gay dude, he was like, he was just like, he called me something. He was like ‘n*gger. So then I was like, 'Well, you got me messed up.' And then I called him a ‘f*g.’ And after that, the girl, she dropped her purse. That's when she came in my face, pushed me, and then my glasses came off, and then, like, I had, like, jumped at her, like, to watch out. I was like, 'Watch out.' And then she came in my face. I put my head down. And she swung on me.”
He continued,
"And after that, like, I was so shocked, because she hit me so hard. It felt like a dude hit me. And, like, after that, like, my face went boom, my reaction was just right there."
Joe told detectives he followed her inside the restaurant after she went inside to tell Sooners running back David Smith that they were trying to “jump” her.
“The girl, I guess she got scared or what, she went up inside, and she went to talk to the person that I came there with [Smith], and I guess she knew him or whatever.”
“So when she went inside, she was talking about how we were trying to jump her. So that’s when [Molitor’s friend] went inside, and I followed the dude. That’s when I interrupted her and I was talking to Sooner Dave, talking about how nobody was trying to jump her, we had no problem with her, she was just being disrespectful, you know … smoking in my face and acting crazy.”
He later said:
“I mean, even though she pushed me, I didn’t think she was going to hit me. I was so shocked, because she hit me so hard, it felt like, really, like a dude hit me. And then, like, my face just started ringing. And after that, like, it was just like a reaction.”
Police ended up charging Joe with misdemeanor assault. Under an Alford plea deal, he was sentenced to 100 hours of community service, had to go to counseling and and faced roughly $1,200 in fines. No jail time.
According to reports, Joe was suspended for the 2014 season, but didn't lose a year of eligibility. He played in 11 games this season. A civil suit filed by Amelia against Joe is currently pending.
