Former N.W.A. member and producer Dr. Dre has issued an apology to the all of the women he hurt in his past. Most specifically, the ones he allegedly physically assaulted.
Since the highly successful biopic Straight Outta Compton was released, there has been a lot of chatter online about things missing from the film. Most notably, Dre’s violent past where he is accused of physically abusing women.
“Hollywood Divas” star and ex-girlfriend of Dr. Dre, Michel’le, has been vocal about Dre’s abuse for a while now. But it seems, she’s getting a lot of extra media attention about the abuse allegations since the release of the movie. Former TV personality Dee Barnes wrote a candid article detailing the incident where Dre abused her in a women’s bathroom in 1991. A year before, singer Tairrie B. claims Dre assaulted her, punching her in eye and the mouth, in front of a group people at a Grammys party.
During promo rounds for the blockbuster film, Dre vaguely opened up to Rolling Stone about his violent past, stating he made a lot of horrible mistakes in life (blaming it on being young and stupid) and that he would never make those mistakes again.
Now…he’s owning up to his mistakes (or conveniently trying to clear his reputation) and is publicly apologizing. While he doesn’t specifically name names or recalls certain incidents, he claims he is working on being a better man. In a statement released through the NY Times, the superproducer said,
“Twenty-five years ago I was a young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure in my life. However, none of this is an excuse for what I did. I’ve been married for 19 years and every day I’m working to be a better man for my family, seeking guidance along the way. I’m doing everything I can so I never resemble that man again.”
He added,
“I apologize to the women I’ve hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.”
Speaking of his violent past…
At one point, the well-known incident between Dre and female hip-hop journalist Dee Barnes was going to be included in the film. The scene was ultimately cut as director F. Gary Gray and producers tried to fit in the most important highlights of the group’s rise to fame.
The L.A. Times got their hands on the alleged scene between Dr and Dee that was reportedly included in screenwriter Jonathan Herman’s initial draft. The scene reads:
In the scene, the fictional Dre, “eyes glazed, drunk, with an edge of nastiness, contempt” (per noted from the script) spots Barnes at the party and approaches her.
“Saw that [expletive] you did with Cube. Really had you under his spell, huh? Ate up everything he said. Let him diss us. Sell us out.”
“I just let him tell his story,” Barnes’ character retorts, “That’s what I do. It’s my job.”“I thought we were cool, you and me,” Dre fires back. “But you don’t give a [expletive]. You just wanna laugh at N.W.A, make us all look like fools.”
The conversation escalates, Barnes throws her drink in Dre’s face before he attacks her “flinging her around like a rag-doll, while she screams, cries, begs for him to stop.”
