NOSTALGIC FEELS! 'In Living Color' Reunites & Shares How They Duped FOX Into Airing Inappropriate Jokes

"In Living Color" - arguably the best comedy sketch show to hit television - reunited recently and spilled tidbits about how they were able to get some of their inappropriate jokes on air. See their reunion flicks and find out how they duped FOX inside...

If you grew up in the 90s then you KNOW "In Living Color" was the best comedy variety show on television. That's not up for debate.

The cast was made up of a group of black entertainers who served up endless laughs with their comedy sketches that poked fun at EVERYBODY. Oh, and we can't forget the show introduced us to the Fly Girls and had us dresse din neon trying learn every move they did on that fake rooftop.

Honestly, we doubt "In Living Color" would survive on television now with as many inappropriate jokes that were tossed around. However, it was a groundbreaking show that tested boundaries. And we're grateful to have been able to witness it.

Twenty-five years after the finale, the cast reunited, including creator and star Keenen Ivory Wayans (above), at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC to take a trip down memory lane about how the hit show became a classic. Several cast mates joined Keenen, including his brother Shawn Wayans, his sister Kim Wayans, and co-stars Tommy Davidson and David Alan Grier.

"In Living Color" did exactly what it was supposed to do - "push the envelope." But, it took some genius strategizing to get some of the more inappropriate jokes on air.

“We knew what we were doing. We knew there was nothing like us, and we were happy about it because we knew that we were first. We did it all on purpose,” Tommy Davidson said (pictured below alongside his wife Amanda Davidson). “We knew that there was not a show where everybody gets to laugh: white, black, Asian, Latino—because we all laugh at the same things anyway. But finally, we had a show that represented everybody. So we knew if it got on the air exactly what it would do.”

Keenen Ivory Wayans shared how they would have to trick the Fox network into signing off on culturally specific content that was, at the time, deemed inappropriate. They had to lean on the network's “cultural ignorance" to get the jokes they wanted in the final cut.

“Here’s the thing: it’s nice when they don’t know,” Keenen Ivory said. “So we used to have fun with censors. We had a couple of instances where what we would do is, we would put things in that we didn’t want to be in [the final cut], and we would laugh really hard at the table reads or the rehearsal, and the censor would get nervous and they would come in and say, ‘You can’t say that! You’ve gotta come up with something else.’“

 photo Tri1.jpg

That tactic, Keenen Ivory continued, once helped them convince censors to replace “kayak city” with “toss your salad”—a story that led to what was likely the biggest laugh break of the 50-minute panel discussion. Hedley family sketches managed to sneak in Jamaican curse words like “bumboclaat” without the censors thinking twice of it. It wasn’t until Jamaican viewers wrote the network three or four episodes in, Grier recalled, that Standards began catching on. “So we’d already won by that point,” he said.

Ha!

As we mentioned earlier, a show like "In Living Color" would likely have a hard time getting the greenlight today, but Keenan doesn't seem to think so.

When David Alan Grier was asked if “Men on…” could air on television today, he responded,

“I don’t think you can,” he said. “My personal politics, my personal knowledge of trans, gay, LGBTQ culture — I say that because I’m trying to get all the letters out — is different. You know, I have evolved from then. But back then, I would say there was never any malice in our portrayal of these gay men, at least from my perspective at that time. But it was very much of its time.”

“What I remember is it was very generational,” he added. “The younger gay community endorsed us, and the older, more conservative community was like, ‘You don’t talk about that.'”

“I think that the sketch could be done today,” Keenan responded. “I think that we have more information about gay culture, so maybe we could make it even funnier…but like David said, the whole intent of the show was to include everybody. We thought, ‘Everybody’s gonna laugh.'” He acknowledged that “you can only be as good as the time period that you live in with the information that you have,” however.

Shemar Moore Shares Final Text From 'Y&R' Co-Star Kristoff St. John As Show Wraps Up Tribute

 photo ShemarM.jpg

Shemar Moore shares a touching last text message he received from his longtime friend, the late "Young and the Restless" co-star Kristoff St. John. Find out Kristoff's last message to Shemar and more inside...

The "Young and the Restless" wrapped up its multi-episode tribute to the late Kristoff St. John, who played Neil Winters since 1991, today. The tribute episodes featured flashbacks of Neil Winters, showing some of his first scenes and his co-stars speaking about how great he was in between sets, his memorial and the storyline of his on-screen family finding out that he died.

Before the final tribute episode aired, Shemar Moore appeard on "The Talk" to reveal a few things about Kristoff we didn't know previously. The on-screen younger brother of Neil said that if it wasn't for Kristoff, he may not have landed the role as Malcolm Winters!

Apparently, Kristoff advocated for Shemar during a discussion with co-creator William J. Bell after Shemar tried out for the role in 1994. He said St. John gave him some advice before the audition, telling him,

"He goes, 'Keep the shades on 'cause I know you're nervous, but I got you... Just ride with me, and we'll get it done.' "

Later, St. John handpicked Shemar for the role because he saw a lot of potential in him.

"I want the scared kid with the baseball hat and the sunglasses to play my brother," St. John reportedly told the producer. "He's got a long way to go, but I know he can do it."

Shemar returned to "Y&R" with his longtime co-stars Victoria Rowell (ex-Drucilla Winters), Mishael Morgan (ex-Hilary Curtis Winters), and Christel Khalil (Lily Winters) to pay tribute to the soap opera legend in a multi-episode tribute.

"Without him, I honestly wouldn't be in this business the way that I am — or maybe, not even at all," Shemar said.

Kristoff was found dead inside his Woodland Hills home in LA on Feb. 3rd, just days after he was released from the mental health facility. He reportedly had a history with bipolar disorder and suicidal threats. He was 52.

 photo shemarYR2.png

The "S.W.A.T." actor appeared on "The Talk" alongside his "Y&R" co-stars where he also shared the last text St. John sent him.

"Bro. On the real. I look up to you," the text said. "What you have accomplished. You were a squeaky clean Lil boy, with stars in your eyes. Now you are the center of an entire solar system. You have survived against all odds. In a business that doesn't want US."

St. John praised Shemar as being "far beyond any black star that has graced TV in the last 50 years...except Denzel on St. Elsewhere. And even he, wasn't the actor, who exuded sex and charisma like you."

"Keep pressing. Keep grinding," and signed off with, "You are Shemar."

Check it:

Although Kristoff is longer with us, Shemar said he's going to keep on carrying him [around his neck on red carpets as they playfully did] and make him proud:

Will Smith Was Reportedly Nervous About 'A PR Nightmare' After Loaning Duane Martin $1.4 Mill

 photo willsmithduane1.png

Will Smith loaned his friend Duane Martin over $1 million to save his home. New emails have surfaced revealing the Hollywood titan was worried about the media drama that would come from the million dollar gift. More inside...

This year is going to be one hell of a year for Will Smith at the box office. However, the Hollywood titan was worried his name would be making headlines for all of the wrong reasons.

Apparently, the Oscar nominated actor loamed his longtime friend Duane Martin $1.4 million to save his home from foreclosure. Now, new emails have surfaced revealing the Bad Boys 3 actor was nervous about a "PR nightmare" that could have exploded in his face if news got out that he loanded him the money.

The Blast reports:

The emails are from 2012, when Duane needed the money to save his L.A. home, and asked his good friend Will for a loan. At one point, Will discussed buying Duane a home and letting him live rent free for a bit.

Will got his team involved in trying to put a $1.4 million loan together but unsealed court documents reveal it was “chaotic.” Duane pressured his friend for the loan and even had to be warned by Will’s team that while Will wanted to help, he didn’t want to put himself in any unnecessary risk.

Duane was really doing the most to get this cash and that made Will's team uneasy. The "All Of Us" star wanted the loan structured in a particular way and that made Will's people question why he wanted it this particular way.

“This is both a PR risk and a legal risk for WS,” one of Will’s advisors wrote in an email. “No PR nightmare can and will happen here.”

After ironing everything out, Will eventually loaned him the money in 2012. By 2018, Duane wanted to sell the home and reached out to Will's camp again. They suggested he sell the home and repay Will and then lease a pad for one year. Duane wasn't feeling it and questioned if this idea came from Will himself. They confirmed it did.

As of July 2018, private emails show Will directing his team to wrap up all outstanding issues with Duane. He wrote one of his advisors, “The point is to SIMULTANEOUSLY Get the books cleared while Helping Shake transition.” Will uses “Shake” as a nickname for Duane.

More drama begin to stir up once Duane and Tisha Campbell Martin filed for bankruptcyand divorce.

The home wasn’t listed as an asset in the bankruptcy but court docs reveal Tisha rolled on Duane, telling the trustee he hid the home in question in the bankruptcy. The trustee then sued Duane, demanding he turn over the pad to help pay off his many creditors.

The revelations are a part of the lawsuit filed back in September, where the trustee in Duane and Tisha Campbell-Martin’s bankruptcy sued Duane because the trustee believed he hid assets of $2.6 million under a company named Roxe LLC.

The trustee alleged that Duane set up Roxe LLC to allegedly conceal ownership of a 9,000 sq. ft. mansion in Chatsworth, California. Duane originally bought the home in 2006 for $900,000. He then borrowed $1.9 million for the purpose of constructing the “Martin family home.”

Duane defaulted on the loan and then was able to negotiate a short sale with the bank. He bought the home back from the bank via Roxe LLC, using the $1.4 million loan from Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. Roxe LLC became the owner and Duane and Tisha allegedly entered into a lease with their own company to pay rent of $5,000 per month.

In early 2018, Duane listed the home for $2,695,000 with the intention of pocketing all of the sales proceeds, after paying back Will and Jada, meaning he would pocket $1.3 million if sold at asking price.

The trustee says the lease was a sham and Duane and Tisha did not make all the payments on the house.

The suit is demanding Duane be forced to turn over the home to the bankruptcy estate and used to benefit his creditors. To be clear, there are no allegations that Will or Jada did anything wrong or had any knowledge of any alleged wrongdoings. Martin has also denied any wrongdoing.

Back in February, court docs filed revealed Will Smith had been subpoenaed by the trustee and was forced to turn over financial records and private emails and texts with Duane Martin regarding the loan and home.

The trustee believed the documents were the evidence to prove Duane committed fraud, showing him put pressure on Will Smith to loan him the money quickly.

The case is ongoing.

Listen, Will is over there like "My name ain't Bennett, so I ain't in it." We'll just have to see how this all plays out in court.

On a lighter note....

Sad news has rocked the Braxton family for the second time in a few months. The sisters' niece and Michael Braxton's daughter, Lauren, was found dead in her Maryland apartment today. Story inside.

Lauren Braxton, who went by LoLo, has passed away the young age of 24. Police authorities confirmed that they called to her home yesterday afternoon, and was pronounced dead on the scene:

Law enforcement tells TMZ ... they received a 911 call around noon on Monday, and Lauren -- who went by the nickname LoLo -- was unresponsive when they arrived. She was pronounced dead by paramedics.

LoLo's family reportedly told authorities she had a pre-existing heart condition and that it was the cause of her death. LoLo's cousin whom she was close to posted this, asking why she didn't just call him:

LoLo was often seen with her aunts, Toni and Traci, and also was a hairstylist and makeup artist. She's always shared her love for her aunts and her father through IG pics, and she even called Traci "auntie/mom."

We can't imagine what the family is going through at this time, especially so close to the death of Trina Braxton's ex-husband Gabe Solis whom she was still in communication with. Trina just shared this on Instagram:

She shared pics with her dad and fam often:

We're keeping the Braxton family and all of LoLo's loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.

Nipsey Hussle's Sister Reportedly Files For Guardianship Of His Daughter Emani, Allegedly Claims Her Mother 'Can't Properly Care For Her'

There's been an unexpected twist after the death of Nipsey Hussle.  His sister, Samantha, is reportedly now seeking guardianship of the late rapper's daughter, and there are alleged claims that her mother Tanisha is unable to care for her.  Story inside.

Samantha Smith, the half sister of Nipsey Hussle, is trying to make good on her promise to care for his oldest child, 7-year-old Emani Asghedom.  According to new court docs, Samantha is filing for guardianship of her.

Samantha was seencaring for Emani during Nipsey's memorial services as well.

The Blast reports that she "wants to put a guardianship in place to ensure that she can make legal custody decisions regarding Emani".  It's also about keeping her near her paternal family as the site states the guardianship is “to ensure [Emani] can continue to live with family members with whom she has always had close ties.”

Interestingly, the docs are also co-signed by Nipsey's father.

The site continues:

According to the guardianship filing, Emani’s current address was omitted due to the “ongoing criminal investigation of father’s homicide.” Emani’s mother is a woman named Tanisha, who goes by the name Chyna Hussle. It’s unclear why Tanisha has not tried to declare custody, or if she is aware that Nipsey’s sister is making a move for the young girl.

Nipsey’s father, Dawit Asghedom, also signed off on the documents, giving his blessing for Smith to be the guardian.

Smith says she has “always been a presence in Emani’s life and along with the rest of Emani’s paternal family has assisted in her care.”

TMZ added that "sources say Samantha believes the child's biological mother is unable to care for the child."

Samantha has a child of her own as well:

Since Nipsey's death, Emani's mother Tanisha has changed her Instagram name to ChynaHussle. She also previously changed her last name to Asghedom, despite never being married. It's unclear if she made the change legally or symbolically.

Tanisha has also been under fire for posting numerous messages about loving Nipsey ever since his death, despite being in a new relationship. Commenters have blasted her for seemingly clout chasing, while other commenters are defending her.

IN LOCK UP: Soulja Boy Sentenced To 240 Days In Jail & Community Service For Probation Violation!

 photo souljasentenced.png

Soulja Boy isn't getting out of jail anytime soon. A judge just sentenced him for violating his probation. Deets inside...

Looks like Soulja Boy will be behind bars at least until the end of the year.

A judge reportedly sentenced him to serve 240 days in jail along with 265 days of community service for violating his probation.

The "Crank That" rapper appeared in court today (April 30th) where his attorney tried to sway the judge that he had an "awakening" while serving the last 20 days behind bars. Hmph. However, the judge wasn't having it. He/she is clearly fed up with Soulja's antics and sentenced him to serve more jail time for breaking the law.

The 28-year-old rapper will start his sentence right away with 40 days served.

Law enforcement snatched him up earlier this month after he reportedly failed to do his court-ordered community service. Not only that, he tried to falsify evidence that he had completed it, but, obviously, it didn't work. Sighs...

You'll recall, the jail drama kicked off back in February when cops searched his home and found ammunition. The thing is, they were there to investigate a claim by a woman who said the rapper tied her up and held her hostage in his garage. Cops executed a search warrant and found ammunition, which he's not allowed to have due to his probation terms. He was arrested in 2014 on a weapons charge and that's why he was on probation.

After they booked him in March, he was released later that day. By April 11th, he was back behind bars and will remain there until he serves this 240 day sentence.

Looks like the #FreeDrako social media campaign will continue.

They've been together forever now, and despite Chrissy proposing to him back in the early "Love & Hip Hop" days, they're still not married.  Yet.  But Jim Jones surely seems more open about showing his sensitive side to the world when it comes to his love for his woman.

The twosome were spotted leaving Jay-Z's B-Sides 2 concert at Webster Hall a few nights ago.  Chrissy - who was kicking off her b-day celebrations - was there to support her man - who made a surprise on stage appearance with Hov - and didn't let a nipslip stop her.

The Down South rapper popped up on social media with a video where he tells all his fans that he and his home boys were throwing a topless pool party. He was looking to round up some chicks to get "flewed out" to his crub for the bash. To get an invite, he encouraged the females on his live to strip down for him as his followers looked on.

It didn't take long for some females to strip all the way down for the Baton Rouge rapper. One chick popped in on the live stream, showing off her breasts that were pierced. She kept her face out of the camera, but made sure to give a close up of her lady lumps.

WARNING: NSFW!

Another chick hopped on and did the same thing. She apparently had met the rapper previously and started to spill some tea about their sexual encounter. Once she started sharing too much, Boosie quickly shut her down. Check it:

Lordt.

As he was scouting more women, things took a turn. A hilarious one at that. Boosie invited a fan to join the live stream and when the fan logged on, he realized in was a child!

"I'm going live with Lil Boosie," the kid said excitedly.

"Oh, it's a kid. Oh my f****** God!," Bossie responded as he passed whatever he was smoking to his homie - as if the kid didn't already see it.

Boosie quickly kicked the kid off the live and blocked her in fear of getting in trouble. Get your laugh on below:

Hilar.

Oh, and he wasn't done there. Boosie also showed off his unique sandwich making skills:

We can't!

Here's how the topless pool party turned out:

A black woman shopping at the Sephora in Calabasas - she must be stealing. At least, that's what "Sandy Sephora" thinks. Go inside for SZA's account of how she was racially profiled in the beauty products store inside...

It's 2019 and black people are still being racially profiled. Nothing new.

Last night, singer SZA hopped on Twitter to recount a horrible experience she had while looking to grab some new Fenty Beauty products at a Sephora in Calabasas.

The "Love Galore" singer says she had security called on her after an associate - that she dubbed "Sandy Sephora (a la Permit Patty, BBQ Becky) - assumed she was stealing. Girl...

"Lmao Sandy Sephora location 614 Calabasas called security to make sure I wasn’t stealing . We had a long talk. U have a blessed day Sandy," she tweeted.

"Can a b*tch cop her fenty in peace er whut?," she continued.

Oh, and get this! SZA used to work for the beauty care store before she became a star.

It didn't take long for SZA fans to retaliate. They quickly hopped online and started posting bad reviews under the Sephora store's Google page. It currently has a rating of 1.2 out of 5 stars:

Rap pioneers Bushwick Bill and Kurtis Blow are dealing with some serious issues. Get the details inside...

Geto Boys' Bushwick Bill - a founding member of the Houston Hip Hop group Geto Boys - revealed he's battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

The 52-year-old chopped it up with TMZ where he announced he's undergoing intensive chemotherapy treatments to fight it. Bushwick Bill said he was shocked to learn he had cancer because doctors tested him for months after they found a mass that was benign on his pancreas.

The rapper found out in February, but has kept his diagnosis private, only sharing the news with close family members. He said keeping the diagnosis to himself wasn't helping anyone, so he said he was going to tell his fellow Geto Boys bandmates, Scarface and Willie D.

Bushwick Bill said he's not afraid to die because he "died and came back in June 1991" and he knows what's on the other side.

The rapper is currently working on three albums, a documentary and a book, so that he'll have residual income coming in for his children once he's gone.

Incredibly sad.

Peep the clip below:

As for another rap legend...

 photo kurtisblow.jpg

Kurtis Blow - one of the founding fathers of Hip Hop - is asking his fans to offer up prayers for him as he prepares for heart surgery at UCLA. He's scheduled to undergo a procedure to stabilize his aortic artery from further damage.

The 59-year-old - who suffered a heart attack in 2016 - explained the surgery will repair damage caused "by the hematoma I [contracted] from my recent travels to China. Dr. Kwon is an incredible surgeon with hundreds of these procedures under his belt. I trust that God will use him as a tool of success tomorrow.”

The rapper was in China recently to speak at the 2019 Music Cities Convention.

We're keeping Kurtis Blow and Bushwick Bill in our prayers for speedy recoveries!

'Empire' Gets The Greenlight For Season 6 + Jussie Smollett Remains In Limbo, Says He's 'Grateful'

 photo jussienotcomingback.png

"Empire" has been renewed for season 6. As for Jussie Smollett, his return remains in limbo. Get the latest inside...

"Empire" was rocked when star Jussie Smollett first came out with allegations that he had been attacked during a racist and homophobic attack in Chicago back in January.

Since then, he has had all 16 felony charges brought up against him for lying to police dropped, so he's cleared criminally. However, the City of Chicago is suing him for $130,000 for the man hours put into investigating what they dubbed a "staged attack."

Since the drama popped off, folks have been wondering if the 36-year-old actor would be returning for a new season.

Well, FOX has announced that the hit drama series has been renewed for a 6th season. However, Jussie's role as Jamal Lyon remains in limbo.

“By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for Season 6, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire,” Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV said in a statement to Deadline.

Jussie was already written out of the final two episodes of the current season, which wraps up May 8th.

Since the network extended the actor's option for season six, it's possible his character could be brought back at a later date. It seems the network could be waiting to see how this civil case against him plays out.

A rep for Jussie made a statement to Deadline following news "Empire" was getting the greenlight for another season.

“We’ve been told that Jussie will not be on Empire in the beginning of the season but he appreciates they have extended his contract to keep Jamal’s future open,” Jussie's rep said. “Most importantly he is grateful to Fox and Empire leadership, cast, crew and fans for their unwavering support.”

Hmm...def doesn't sound like the agreement was "mutual" like FOX said.

In other news, Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx has reportedly been subpoenaed over her handling of the Jussie Smollett case. The Cook County Prosecutor's office made the controversial decision to drop all of the charges. It's reported a retired judges obtained that subpoena in a push to have a special prosecutor appointed. Jussie could also be summoned to that hearing. Kim Foxx - who recused herself from the case - said she welcomes an independent investigation.

G Herbo Charged With Battery For Allegedly Dragging Ex-Ari By Her Hair + Raz B ARRESTED For Allegedly Strangling Girlfriend

 photo herbochargedteaser.png

Whew, chile. G Herbo has been officially charged with battery after a physical altercation with his ex/son's mother Ari Fletcher. Meanwhile, B2K singer Raz B was arrested for domestic violence. Deets inside...

After getting arrested in Atlanta for allegedly assaulting his son's mother Ari Fletcher last month, rapper G Herbo (real name Herbert Wright III) is now facing a battery charge.

Prosecutors say the 23-year-old dragged Ari - who's supposedly pregnant by her new boyfriend Gervonta Davis - by her hair during a heated discussion, which caused visible scratches on her arm. Now, he has been charged with one count of misdemeanor battery. If convicted, he faces a possible max sentence of 1 year behind bars.

You'll recall, Ari hopped on Instagram Stories right after G Herbo was arrested and gave a detailed account of what she claims happened when her son's father assaulted her following a heated argument. She claims he gave her a black eye, dragged her outside, and trashed her house. And it all allegedly happened in front of their one-year-old son.

After G Herbo was initially arrested and released, he hopped on Instagram Live to address the situation. He claims Ari STOLE his jewelry during a party at his mother's house. He said Ari told him to come to Atlanta to get his property back and that's when the argument started.

By the way, Herbo's new girlfriend Taina Williams (Fabolous & Emily B's daughter) is sticking by her man's side during all of the drama. At least, for now.

By the way, G Herbo will be hitting the stage at this year's Rolling Loud Festival in Miami on Sunday, May 12th.

As for another domestic violence situation...

Raz B is currently in jail in Minneapolis! The reason? He allegedly assaulted his girlfriend.

It's reported the B2K singer was arrested for domestic assault by strangulation early Wednesday morning (May 1st). Sources tell TMZ the victim was Raz B's girlfriend. Sighs...

According to a dispatch call, the alleged assault happened on the ramp of a Macy's store. He claims it was self defense. Oh.

The site reports:

Sources close to Raz tell TMZ ... the singer and his GF got into an argument that turned physical when she attacked him, and Raz's side claims he was defending himself.

We're told the girlfriend informed a family member about the altercation, which led to cops being called and Raz B being arrested. Raz insists he did not purposely strike or choke her.

Law enforcement sources tell us police will be investigating to see what led to the altercation, and some evidence may include surveillance footage because it happened in a parking lot area.

Raz is currently being held without bail, which throws a monkey wrench in the Millennium Tour if he doesn't get out in time. They're set to hit the stage at the Target Center in Minneapolis tonight.

You'll recall, Raz made headlines when he hopped on social media to announce he was leaving the tour because he didn't feel comfortable around their former manager, Chris Stokes. However, he returned after a conversation with his band mate Omarion, saying he was going to push through and continue on with the reunion tour.

There are 10 more steps left on their tour. Whether Raz B will be hitting the stage with B2K...well, that's up in the air for now.

Oprah Winfrey was showered with love for all of her accomplishments at The Hollywood Reporter’s inaugural Empowerment in Entertainment luncheon. Several celebs were in attendance to pay homage to the media queen. Get it all inside...

Oprah Winfrey is getting her flowers while she's still here.

The media queen was honored with first-ever Empowerment in Entertainment award at The Hollywood Reporter’s inaugural Empowerment in Entertainment luncheon in LA. The award honors those who have created opportunities for people of color, women, members of the LGBTQ community and other emerging voices in the industry.

Not only did she receive the first award of its kind, the award will be called the Oprah Winfrey Empowerment in Entertainment Award going forward.

The gala also launched the Young Executives Fellowship, which provides 20 hand-picked L.A. high school students with industry mentors, internships and, for some, college scholarships. At the event, 20 local high school juniors - who had been selected for the program - were in attendance. They were awarded with FULL scholarships to Howard University and Emerson College, and all of them received a laptop as well. Nice!

As the students were presented with their scholarships, Lady O was brought to tears - tears of joy, of course.

 photo HollywoodReporterEmpowermentEntertainmentdI6vKN-bR7ql.jpg

Singer Alica Keys presented Oprah with her award and shared how she always looked up to her for inspiration.

 photo HollywoodReporterEmpowermentEntertainmentu8YeNRuXzGAl.jpg

"As a woman, especially a woman of color, I rarely saw a role model like her," the singer-songwriter said. "We were shown that the only way to be successful was to be domineering, demanding, harsh, an old white guy in a three-piece suit, banging on a conference table. But Oprah shows us that you can have tenderness and sensitivity; you can care about the world and the people in it; you can have a heart and still be a badass."

Peep a clip below:

 photo HollywoodReporterEmpowermentEntertainmentRzt13MPQ_pbl.jpg

The media mogul - who covers THR's Empowerment issue - served up a speech filled with gems and motivational words.

"I think a whole lot of us in this country have been feeling a kind of impotent rage, as a result of the micro-inequalities and the macro unfairness we see every single day. Well, I’m here to tell you, that there is a time to let things happen, and there is a time to make things happen," she said. "This new program and this extraordinary award is a declaration that now is the time to actually make some things happen."

Lady O recounted how she always had to fight for equal pay for herself and others throughout her career. In her early beginnings, she was paid less than her male co-workers as a reporter in Baltimore. She talked about speaking up about getting paid more and how she fought at The Oprah Winfrey Show so that her female producers would get a fair raise.

"Empowerment is authority. It’s a signed permission slip to seize the day," she continued. "It’s the process of getting stronger and more confident and more engaged. To be empowered is to move through the world without fear or apology, and with these gifts, come an even deeper privilege — the ability to take charge of your own life and claim your rights."

"I stand here today, feeling more empowered than ever before. I come as one and I stand as 10,000, grateful beyond words to look around this room and know that we are all here to fulfill the dreams of those who came before us," Winfrey said. "We are here not merely to bear witness, but to be the new voices of an extraordinary new age."

At the end of her speech, she turned her attention to the youth in the room, telling them:

"When I look at you, Young Executives, I see the hope in your eyes, and it reminds me of the way my daughter-girls from my Academy in South Africa look on graduation day as they cross the stage to accept their diplomas. I see the sacrifice and work that it took to get you there. But more than that, I see the ways in which your lives are forever changed because of the opportunity you were given and the choices you made to step up into leadership roles and end the cycles of abuse and poverty that your mothers and grandmothers and fathers have endured."

"I am proud that we are all stepping into our power to make a lasting impact on the next generations. Our power to say no to assholes," added Winfrey, thanking Shonda Rhimes for coining the line. "Our power to say that the way things were done yesterday does not define how we will still do them tomorrow."

Sorry To Bother You producer Charles D. King and brought his wife Stacey King as his date for the luncheon.

On the magazine front:

Oprah got all glammed up for the cover of The Hollywood Reporter's Empowerment issue.

In the cover story, she talked about the foolery that was going on at 60 minutes that made her leave, advice she gave to her bestie/"CBS This Morning" co-anchor Gayle King, and not being worried about the backlash from the "Leaving Neverland" interviews.

Here are the highlights:

On why she recently left 60 Minutes: I’ve removed myself from that. It was not the best format for me ... How should I say this? Never a good thing when I have to practice saying my name and have to be told that I have too much emotion in my name…. I think I did seven takes on just my name because it was ‘too emotional.’ I go, ‘Is the too much emotion in the Oprah part or the Winfrey part?’ I was working on pulling myself down and flattening out my personality — which, for me, is actually not such a good thing.

On advice she gave Gayle King on renewing her CBS News contract: I said, “Get what you want. Get exactly what you want because now’s the time. And if you don’t get what you want, then make the next right move.” Even without me, she was going to do that. But that was my advice, and I actually called up her lawyer, Allen Grubman, and I said, “Allen, she should get what she wants.” And Allen goes, “What the F do you think I’m doing here? I said the same thing to her!” The negotiation was already happening before her R. Kelly interview.

On her reaction to the R. Kelly interview: I sent her a text saying, “Jesus looooves you.” But [the R. Kelly interview] could not have been better if I had done that myself. I think every interviewer thinks, “What would you have done in that moment?” And what she did was absolute perfection.

On whether she regrets getting involved with Leaving Neverland: I don’t regret it ... I saw it, and I was shaken by it. I wasn’t even shaken by the fact that it was Michael Jackson, I was shaken by the fact that [filmmaker] Dan Reed had done a really good job of showing the pattern, and for years, I had been trying to show people the pattern. I’d been trying to say it’s not about the moment, it’s about the seduction. The first thing I said to Gayle when we watched it was, “Gayle, you’ve got to get those guys [on CBS This Morning].” She Instagrammed about it, and I go, “No, you shouldn’t Instagram, you should just get those guys.”

On the blowback: Oh, the hateration? Honeeeeey, I haven’t had that much hateration since “The Puppy Episode” with Ellen [Winfrey guested as the therapist on the 1997 Ellen sitcom episode in which Ellen DeGeneres’ character comes out], and it made me think, “Thank goodness Ellen’s coming out was before social media because can you imagine?” During “The Puppy Episode,” I had to take the people who were on my switchboard at Harpo off the switchboard because of the vitriol. They were scared..

Remy Ma Turns Herself Into Police For Alleged Assault Of 'LAHH' Star Brittney Taylor, Released On Bail

Remy Ma turned herself into police and was released on bail for the alleged assault of her "Love & Hip Hop" co-star Brittney Taylor. See a video of Rem and her husband Papoose leaving the courthouse and get the deets inside...

Remy Ma turned herself into police today, two weeks after her "Love & Hip Hop" co-star Brittney "Bri" Taylor accused her of punching her in the face.

It's reported the "Melanin Magic" rapper was booked for misdemeanor assault. You'll recall, Bri hopped on social media with a black eye claiming Rem physically assaulted her backstage during the Pretty Lou Benefit Concert that went down at Irving Plaza in NYC on April 16th. After the alleged attack, Bri went to the hospital and filed a police report.

As police investigated, Bri started building her own civil case against the rapper, asking Irving Plaza and the NYPD to hold on to any video footage, photos, investigative reports, and any other evidence in connection to her alleged physical altercation with Remy. We knew something was up when an ankle monitor was spotted on Remy's ankle.

Remy reportedly went before a judge and her bail was set at $1,500. She posted bail and was released. The judge ordered a protective order, which means Remy can not have any contact with Bri. The judge also set an 8pm curfew for Rem.

Dawn Florio - the "All The Way Up" rapper's lawyer - said all of the accusations made against her client are false. She pointed out that Bri made claims that the attack went down at 9:30pm, however, Florio claims there is video proof that Remy was at home at that time. She also pointed out that it was suspicious that Bri hired a civil attorney immediately after the attack.

Sanford Rubenstein - Bri's attorney - tells TMZ that this is real life, not reality TV, and that Brittany is a victim. He stresses that Brittany "has confidence in our system of justice and will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities."

Taylor Swift's 2019 BBMAs Performance Looked Like An Unseasoned Beychella Knockoff

 photo taylorbey1.png

What in the gentrification hell? Taylor Swift's opening performance looked REAL familar and quite unseasoned. Was it Beychella inspired? Decide for yourself inside...

Taylor Swift tried it, y'all!

The Pop singer was tapped to open the 2019 Billboard Music Awards and soon as we saw that drumline come out, we knew something was up.

Once Taylor Swift appeared, we (and the rest of the Internet) were done. Chick came out to perform her track "ME!" looking like a Beychella Weekend 2 knockoff! She totally gentrified Beyonce's epic (and VERY black) Coachella set, except her performance had ZERO flavor, as expected.

This isn't a reach. A blind man can see the similarities in her set and Bey's Coachella performance. The whitewashed drumline, the pink 'fits - all the makings of Beychella.

Twitter users were quick to point out the resemblelance:

What the...

BIG SIGH....

We understand the Queen is the ultimate inspiration, but she clearly copied and pasted Beyonce's performance. Chile...

What did y'all think of Taylor's performance? Beychella inspired or nah?

About That Alleged Brittney Taylor Attack, Remy Ma Says She Wasn't Even There When it Supposedly Happened

Remy Ma faced the judge yesterday in NYC, and she had an interesting response for "LAHH" co-star Brittney Taylor and her assault accusation.  Details inside.

As she turned herself in on a single count of misdemeanor assault charge on Wednesday, Remy Ma pleaded her case.

The 38-year-old rapper maintained her innocence even after NYPD conducted an investigation into "Love & Hip Hop" star Brittney Taylor's accusations that Remy Ma punched her and blacked her eye backstage at a charity concert at Irving Plaza on April 14th.

Brittney claims the incident - which was allegedly triggered by Brittney telling Remy about an altercation her stepdaughter was involved in - happened at the Pretty Lou Benefit Concert at 9.30pm.

Now, we've learned Remy's "not guilty" plea is due to her claim she wasn't even at the venue during the assault.  She says she was at home.

Seeing that Remy was definitely at the concert and on stage performing that night, she likely meant she wasn't there at 9:30p, when the attack allegedly happened.

Our source who was on the scene tells us that Remy didn't show up until closer to 10:30p, and was only backstage for a few mins before taking the stage.

 photo 13006792-6985045-image-m-10_1556804470686_zpsacp8mc3z.jpg

It could be a case of Brittney having the wrong time that the incident occurred, or the incident could have never happened at all.

Either way, Remy being caught up in this isn't a good look.

Rem, who now co-hosts Revolt's "State of the Culture" show with Joe Budden and others, has just three months left on her parole for shooting a then-friend TWICE in the stomach in 2007.  She served 6 years in prison and has been on model behavior since.
